The Patient Reference Group
What is the Patient Reference Group for?
The patient reference group is about patients taking an active interest in health care and acting to create positive change wherever possible. The group is a prime example of healthcare professionals working together with patients and the public to improve the health communities they serve’.
The group will soon change its name to ‘Patient and Public Involvement’, and looks forward to receive training on its developing role (in accordance to the national guidelines).
‘The Patient Reference Group is a formal group of people who are patients registered at Danby Surgery. It was formed over eight years ago. We have regular meetings with the surgery staff where we discuss any topics raised by patients and are given an update on surgery progress and innovations. In some respects we act as ‘go-between’ for patients to the surgery and vice versa and nationally it is suggested that all surgeries have a Patient Reference Group. With the re-organisation of the National Health Service more decisions about how healthcare is provided are being taken at surgery level. Danby surgery has joined with other local surgeries to form a federation give them a greater voice in negotiating services to be planned and purchased locally. It is important that the services purchased meet the needs of our community.’
As we are seeing increasing changes in the NHS, your feedback with regards to services and local healthcare needs is of real importance.
Currently, key roles include:
- Point of contact for patients of Danby Surgery – the group does not deal with complaints, however, they do act as an important way for patients to relay any views on the provision and development of services
- Creating and analysing the results of Patient surveys
- Colating and analysing the results of the monthly Family & Friends Test
- Commenting on the draft content of the surgery newsletters, web-site and any written information for patients. Recently we have acted to provide information on the out of hours service and local social and leisure activities
